Connecticut license plates first were issued in 1905. They were undated porcelain license plates , and often bore a lightly painted date mark on the back. A large letter "C" was used on Connecticut license plates before the abbreviated state name appeared in 1914. Pre-state Connecticut license plates were the only pre-states used in the New England states. In 2000, all remaining (and relatively) antique Connecticut license plates, dating as far back as 1957, came off the roads. Many of these old Connecticut license plates had lost their blue background paint, while the white numerals remained on a bare metal background. The removal of old Connecticut license plates from 1957 occured during the term of a Governor who happened to have been born in 1957, and who also later happened to be removed from office, and sent to prison.
