Illinois license plates first were issued in either 1910 or 1911, as the 1910 Illinois license plates may actually be pre-states. The large early tags blocked airflow to auto radiators, so 1912 to 1918 plates were perforated with tiny holes, slots, and cut-out areas. The 1943 to '48 Illinois license plates were made of soybean fiber to conserve steel. Legend says that livestock ate the '43 tags right off the autos - prompting a less tasty recipe for later years.
