Maryland license plates first were issued in 1910. These early license plates appear to have been repainted, but in fact, 1910 Maryland license plates were hand-painted from the beginning. In a crude process of embossing, manufacturers created the first-issue Maryland license plates by placing wooden numbers on a table, laying thin metal sheets over the numbers, and pounding the metal with mallets.
