The first issue New Jersey license plate included a seal with a facsimile governor's signature. These seals were used from 1908 through 1915, during which time New Jersey was presumably served by two governors. Because one of the signatures is legible and the other is not, old license plate collectors who notice such things refer to the two as as "Lippincott", and "The Other Guy".
Notably, the number font of the 1918 New Jersey license plates was used into the 21st Century, having not been changed until the latest issues.y
Best of the "Not-so- Old New Jersey license plates: It was very exciting in early 1970 when N.J. experimented with reflectorization on their license plates. No one knows why this idea was abandoned after just a few months, and why New Jersey license plates had to wait nearly two decades to become the last state with fully reflectorized license plates for all issues. Another plate worth mentioning is the 1957 - 58 undated orange on black. Old New Jersey license plates, without exception are sturdy, but this particular one is even more so; in fact, it is almost hard to find one which is not in good condition!
Old New Jersey license plates from the 1959 straw base onward are still on the roads, and considered valid. New Jersey license plates are today actually issued as "permanent" license plates, and considered to be valid indefinitely.
Toughest/Most Rare New Jersey plates: The 1908 first issue. These tended to rust, and if not, to fade egregiously.
