Best Antique Rhode Island license plates: The third issue black-on-white undated Rhode Island tag is the nicest old license plate from Little Rhody. Who can beat that ornate "R" and terrific fonts? The 1912 - 1917 R.I. plate was the last surviving porcelain license tag in southern New England, and excepting New Hampshire's last two issues, the last for all the Eastern US. Best of the "Not-so- Old Rhode Island license plates: It was a happy day in the Ocean State when something fonally appeared on the road in colors other than black, white, or apostate wartime aluminum. The devil-may-care Eighties were ushered in with blue-on-reflectorized white, and Rhode Island plates were never the same. You simply have to love a state that holds off on special issue license plates for nearly a century, and then comes out with a plate honoring Rhode Island's own and beloved...Mister Potato Head. Toughest/Most Rare Rhode Island plates: The 1904 plate, the nation's only new statewide issue of 1904, and second ever state-wide issue, behind the '03 M.A.R. is clearly Rhode Island's most scarce license plate. Everyone knows this old plate is hard to find, but it's actually a little harder to find than most people think, and might even qualify in the class of the first issue Minnesota, North Dakota, Washington, or Maryland: A truly "tough" plate that doesn't appear on any such list of toughies. This is possibly true because most of the big New England collectors already have one, (or two, or three,) as do those who have limited their license plate collecting dollars just to porcelains. But have you tried to get your hands on one at a local plate meet or car show? Or find one on eBay, at any price? (We won't even get into the three "Registered in R.I." type type varieties!)Honorable mention for scarce Rhode Island license plates: At least two collections of Rhode Island license plate state runs were completed, NOT with the first issue porcelain, but with the natural 1970 stickered base as the tag filling the last hole on the wall. If you ever see one of these pale blue on white "70" stickers looking up at you, chances are there's a layer of glue from a gold '71 peeled off of this born again "natural."
