Tennessee license plates first were issued in 1915. From 1936 through 1956, Tennessee license plates were die cut into the shape of the state. After 1956, all North American jurisdictions switched to a uniform six-by-12 inch format. So in order comply, the next Tennessee license plates appeared in the uniform rectangular shape -- along with a state outline that encircled the numbers. This design is found only on the 1957 Tennessee plates.
