Washington license plates first were issued in 1916. There was an odd preponderance of formats for 1919-20 Washington license plates. In most cases, a yellow steel 1919 base plate used an attachable white porcelain license renewal tab in 1920. Variations of the plate also include a one-piece porcelain rendering of the '19 plate, complete with the renewal tab, and an all-metal version with the tab painted on.
