West Virginia license plates first were issued in 1905, and were the first state-issued license plates to bear a date. The 1906 West Virginia license plates were small, almost illegible tags rendered in two shades of a similar blue. West Virginia license plates were issued in porcelain tags from 1907 through the 1915-1916 issue. Beginning with a 1914-1915 license plate, West Virginia license tags carried double dates through the early 1950's.
